Maritime Sector Delegation meets Prime Minister on National Maritime Day

A delegation from the maritime sector, led by Minister for Shipping, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, called on the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi today, on the occasion of National Maritime Day on March 30.

Mr. Gadkari pinned a flag on the lapel of the Prime Minister, to mark the occasion. In the course of discussions, the Prime Minister remarked that India's maritime heritage goes back nearly 5000 years, with the oldest known port being Lothal.

The Prime Minister urged all stakeholders to work together to establish a world-class maritime museum, to showcase this glorious aspect of India's history.

He said India has great potential in the area of shipbuilding, and this must be pursued as part of the "Make in India" initiative.

Mr. Gadkari briefed the Prime Minister on plans for skill development in the shipping sector.

Nitin Gadkari congratulates Maritime Industry

Minister of Shipping and Road Transport & Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari has congratulated the Maritime Industry on the occasion of the Merchant Navy Week which began on March 30. The week long celebrations of the achievements of the Indian maritime sector will culminate on Indian Maritime Day on the 5th of April.

The Minister said that the Government is committed to the development and modernization of India´s maritime industry. The 5th of April, every year, commemorates the maiden sailing of the first Indian flag merchant vessel, “˜SS Loyalty´, from Mumbai to London. This vessel, then belonging to M/s. Scindia Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., Mumbai, heralded the advent of India into the international maritime arena.
