BREAKING NEWS: URGENT -- 6.8-magnitude earthquake strikes central Japan

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck central Japan on late Saturday evening, seismologists said, but no tsunami alerts were issued. There was no immediate word about damage or casualties.
The 6.8-magnitude at 10:08 p.m. local time was centered in Nagano Prefecture about 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Tokyo. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which said there was no threat of a tsunami.
